How to Give Back During the Season of Giving

Winter break is normally a time to relax and recharge your batteries after a long fall semester. Although it’s great to enjoy well-deserved time off, there are so many different ways to utilize your break to give back. The holiday season is the perfect time to help others and make a positive impact in somebody’s lives. Here are a few ways you can make a difference during the Season of Giving.

  • Donate or volunteer at a food bank. Due to tough economic times, there has been an increase in the amount of individuals who rely on the aid from a local food bank. Therefore, donations and volunteers are needed more now than ever. Food pantries are especially in need of donations of non-perishable proteins, baby food, children snacks, and personal hygiene products. You can locate your nearest food pantry here.
  • Donate old clothes to the Salvation Army. Clothes are a common holiday gift. To make room in your closet for your latest additions, sort through the clothes you already own and decide which pieces you no longer wear. Consider donating these items to an organization such as the Salvation Army. Your donations will significantly help individuals who may not possess the same means to purchase clothing items for themselves. You can find a donation center near you here.
  • Monetary Donations. Monetary presents are common from relatives during the holiday season. Why not set aside a portion of these gifts to donate to a charity that resonates with you? There are countless charitable organizations that accept monetary donations to better the lives of others in need. Do a little research and find a charity that best aligns with your values. Remember, no donation is ever too small!
  • Reach out to those around you. When was the last time you genuinely asked someone how they were doing? The holidays are a great time to see if someone in your life is in need of assistance in any way. This could mean visiting your grandparents, shoveling your elderly neighbor’s driveway, or reconnecting with an old friend. A little kindness can make a huge impact in someone’s life.

If you want to get a head start on your holiday kindness, join Off-Campus Student Services for our FREE Pasta Dinner and Food Drive on Monday, December 12th. All that is required for your entry is a donation of a canned food product that will be given to the Mansfield Food Pantry. The event is located in the Student Union Room 304 from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

Happy Holidays!
